It is the old agency problem. Even assuming there is no corruption, the agent tends toward inflexible rules to cover his behind, while the principal is better off using common sense. That’s why I much prefer to deal with consumers rather than (big) business or government.

“Presidents come and go, but the unelected bureaucracy always remains.” YES. How long did Belgium go without a government, recently? The bureaucracy has a life all its own.
You made an excellent point about the true extent of our “national gov’t.” It is far larger than people realize. Not only is the MIC part of it, so is medicine, media, telecom, utilities, automotive and despite the tail wagging the dog, education.
I never understand why people talk about how the US of A is becoming fascist. That began in the 30s and was completed long ago.
